About

Alessandro is a Scientist at STEMCELL Technologies (Cambridge, UK). He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Biological and Molecular Sciences at the University of Pisa, and continued here his studies with a Master in Biomedicine. During his Master, he worked for a year as an intern in the Department of Virology at the University Hospital of Cisanello (AOUP, Pisa, Italy) where he gained expertise on clinical diagnostic virology. His Master’s thesis project evaluated the utility of microarray technology in the diagnosis of viral respiratory tract infections. Prior to his graduation, Alessandro was awarded an Erasmus Placement Scholarship that allowed him to work in Mersin University Hospital (Turkey) for 9 months to broaden his skills in microbiology. In 2017, he was awarded a MSCA scholarship to pursue a Ph.D. in Bioengineering at the University of Galway (Ireland). He became one of the Early Stage Researchers of the Tendon Therapy Train Consortium, based at STEMCELL Technologies (Cambridge, UK), where he successfully developed cell culture media and protocols to differentiate human mesenchymal stem cells and pluripotent stem cells to cells with tenocyte-like properties.

Within GUTVIBRATIONS, Alessandro will be supervised by Dr. Salvatore Simmini (Senior Scientist at STEMCELL Technologies).

Allessandro’s research project

Alessandro is working in the Research and Development Department at STEMCELL Technologies (Cambridge, UK). His project aims to develop and optimize robust cell culture media and protocols for specific in vitro co-culture systems involving human intestinal epithelial, immune, endothelial and neural cells.
